Small Space Garden Design

This post is a good one friends! We’ve been dreaming about this space since we saw our house 2 years ago - vegetable boxes full to it’s brim with veg, a space for our daughter to dream in and lots and lots of plants. We were gifted our greenhouse (this one) from my in-laws for Christmas last year, so when the weather started warming up we started several seedlings in the greenhouse (not expecting them to take off as quickly as they did). My daughter and I checked on them every day; she loves watering them and spotting them poking through the soil and I love watching her love the whole process - it fills me up.

We found these beautiful cedar raised garden beds from Rhino Garden Supply - quick assembly, rot resistant and weed barrier was included and BEAUTIFUL. My husband surprised me with 2 for my birthday in early April. We wanted a clean, easy to manage space around the boxes so we went with marble chips and placed 2 white stepping stones between the beds. The boxes measure 48" Wide x 48" Long x 12" Tall and worked perfectly leaving plenty of space to walk around the boxes. Lay your barrier sheet down then line the boards up and drop the rods into the pre-drilled holes. Lay down a weed barrier sheet before laying the stones and rock down, this will allow for easy weed control and lower maintenance. We cut out a hole in the exterior barrier sheet where the boxes went so there wouldn’t be two barriers under the garden boxes - two may harm the drainage and leave too much water in your boxes. We have eggplant, garlic, potatoes, beans cucumbers, tomatoes, lettuce, kale, squash, zucchini, basil, carrots, corn, strawberries, peppers with Marigolds scattered throughout and they are all doing so well. We also made a trellis for the cucumber and beans to climb, read below for the quick diy how to.

We added a few Citronella plants (they’re beautiful and smell amazing) in terra-cotta pots to compliment the red cedar playhouse - we’re working on adding a few more things to the playhouse so I’ll save the interior details for that post. We planted our daughters wildflowers in a pot next to her house, added a few Lavandula x intermedia plants as well as a Lime bush - potted in the prettiest blush terra-cotta pot I grabbed from a local nursery a few weekends ago. We hung black lights across the patio and a sweet little bird house in the lemon tree that’s just outside the black fence. We plan on adding a projector, large sectional sofa with a grand dining table and chairs but for now we’ll enjoy patio picnics on blankets out here amongst our vegetables and flowers.
